I'll admit, I've never been a big fan of the modern "slow burn" film craze that's been going around. The Invitation and The Blackcoat's Daughter are a couple I can think of that I've truly enjoyed. I always try to go into these types of films with an open mind, hoping for something worth a damn at the end and nine times out of ten I'm let down. I'm left sitting there wondering what the hell I just wasted my time watching. Sadly, Tyler Savage's Inheritance follows the same trend.
The film follows Ryan who (Chase Joliet) inherits a multi-million dollar, beachfront property from the biological father he believed dead long ago. Arriving in the charming town with his pregnant fiancée, Ryan’s curiosity about his father soon leads him into an introspective investigation. As a looming family presence tightens its grip on him.
Things begin to crumble as Ryan has more frequent visions and dreams of his father's past and experiences awkward encounters with the locals. He pushes away his adoptive family and expectant fiancée and begins to seclude himself just as his father did. More shocking events unfold and Ryan begins to unravel secrets that he may not be able to escape.
I really wanted to enjoy this film and I did for the most part until the ending. I feel as though the film was beginning to gain momentum and then just ended with a fizzle...which is what I absolutely cannot stand about these damn "slow burn" films! I wait and wait, hoping for it all to pay off with a fantastic ending and then...nothing. Just left with a million questions and a "what the hell did I just watch?" thought buzzing through my head.
Inheritance had so much going for it, the cinematography was fantastic, the cast was great and actually made the feel the emotions they portrayed, and Tyler Savage is undoubtedly a damn good director worth keeping an eye on. I just can't shake the unsatisfying feeling that I got from the film's ending. There's just way too much that goes without explanation.
Those of you who love these types of films will most likely eat this one up and find a lot to enjoy, I hope people do. I just can't seem to find merit in films like this.
