"This Pussy Is Possessed!"
In comic book turned web series turned film, writer, director and star Nicholas Tana takes on the role of Nick, an aspiring screenwriter that has a problem with his pussy...his hellacious and demonic cat named Angel. The "possessed" feline wreaks havoc upon any female love interest that comes in contact with Nick. Becoming desperate for help, Nick tries love counseling, an exorcism, a seance, and multiple other things in an effort to release evil's grasp on his beloved kitty.
First off, I want to say that this film was definitely made for people who have owned cats and know how insane and fickle they can be. Quite a few of the jokes in this films are based around the "joys" of owning these independent and often sassy fur balls. The film's story is paper thin and pacing is all over the place but the laughs, cameo appearances, and gory moments helped keep me watching, kind of. What little charm the film does have begins to ear thin around the second act. The multitude of cameos by the likes of Doug Jones (Hellboy, The Shape of Water), Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes), Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog, Escape From New York, Swamp Thing), and more do little to help the film's plot or pacing and feel very out of place,
Honestly, it feels as though Tana took a bunch of episodes from the web series and mashed them into a feature film with how the weird script jumps around and doesn't flow all too well. I can see how this worked as webisodes, as the scenes and gags would definitely work as standalone moments, but when clustered like this it just doesn’t work as well, which is not to say that it’s a complete loss, just that it’s a bit overbearing and sporadic. Overall the film is a "one and done" viewing for me, with proper editing and a tighter story this film could've been a lot more enjoyable.
In the end, you can't dive into this film expecting to be blown away, Hell's Kitty is a film that has to be accepted for what it is, a light-hearted flick with average acting and production, decent gore effects, a few laughs, and quite a handful of cameos from some of horror's legends. Nothing more, nothing less. I recommend Hell's Kitty to you if you're a cat lover or if you'd like to experience a few nostalgic laughs and thrills brought on by the film's many homages.
