I'm going to put this bluntly, The Ninth Passenger is by far one of the worst films I have ever seen. Read on to find out why I feel this way about the film.
In a nutshell, the film starts off with a group of lusty and naive fools that steal a corrupt billionaires yacht for a night of fun out on the water. Little do they know that a corporate spy has made his way aboard and is posing as a mechanic with plans to steal some company property. The lusty people I mentioned earlier start doing drugs and having sex. Meanwhile, the yacht starts drifting towards a "mysterious" island and breaks down for no reason. The majority of the group decide that it's a good idea to go get help on said creepy island and they're off in a dinghy. They arrive on the island and find an abandoned facility that's been torn apart. Surprise, some scientist cooked up a few creatures that broke free and killed them all. One of the said creatures show up and nothing really happens, it growls and does some creature stuff while everyone remains hidden. One of the dumb chicks in the group runs off and tries to take the dinghy back to the yacht, she's killed by a creature.
While all of this was happening on the island, a creature had made it onto the yacht and started terrorizing the other members of the group. Everyone meets back up on the boat, the creature kills some people, some people kill some people, and the military shows up. They want what the spy has stolen, he hands everything over and him and another surviving girl jump in the water to escape. They get pulled under by creatures. The end...
There were so many things that annoyed me about The Ninth Passenger. The acting was all over the place, from decently convincing to "this person has never acted in their life". All of the kills were off screen, people seriously just disappeared or were yanked off screen. There was a harpoon to the eye scene that was okay but still rather poorly done. The creatures, though they looked decent, barely had any screen-time and when they did appear the camera would go into spasm mode. Just so many things brought this movie down.
Alright, I'll try to pick out some positives for this film, the camerawork was rather nice (except when filming a creature), the lighting was cool, the creature design, what little you see of it, was decent B-movie quality, and that's about it...
The Ninth Passenger could have been an alright flick, the setup was basic but bearable and it was just all downhill from there. Honestly, if the filmmakers had added some gory, practical effects kills and a better ending, it wouldn't have been as bad of a film...but they didn't and the film is terrible. I'd rather watch all of the Sharknado movies back-to-back than suffer through this one again. I can't imagine anyone giving this film a good review, avoid it.
