Black Market Record Store, which was previously a popular pop-up in Cleveland’s Gordon Square neighborhood, has found a much more fitting home: inside the Phantasy Nightclub complex in Lakewood.
Taking over the space of 11798 Detroit Ave. (the former location of Blue Moon Boutique) Black Market Record Store will open on April 13th, 2019.
Inside the space, you’ll find eclectic music for sale, with selections in death metal, punk, black metal, hardcore, grindcore and harsh noise, according to owner Emma Jochum.
“Our selection is smaller than a lot of other local record stores, but we cater to a very specific market,” she said. “We don't really venture too far outside of these genres, apart from the occasional dad rock album.”
The shop was known for hosting eclectic events like punk rock yoga, heavy metal flea markets and craft supply swaps at its old space. Black Market’s events will continue at the new space, according to Jochum.
Black Market Records will also expand its offerings to include some performance gear like guitar strings and drumsticks, which could help bands performing at nearby venues like Now That’s Class, The Winchester, Foundry Concert Club and 5 O’Clock Lounge.
“I’m so excited to be a part of the Phantasy complex,” Jochum said. “[The Foundry owner] Lisa Covelli and The Foundry crew have already made some amazing improvements to the building, and it will only continue get better. I think this location is going to provide a huge improvement for our foot traffic, being central to all of the west side music clubs.”
