Brett Mullen's Dead Inferno (aka Bombshell Bloodbath) is an original genre piece about Dr. Ben Carter (Rob Springer) and his quest to bring his wife Lisa (Kathy Butler Sandvoss) back to life after her untimely death. Dr. Carter has been digging up the dead and using their corpses as test subjects in order to perfect his C900 serum. Despite warnings from his daughters, the doctor won’t see to reason and continues to become more unhinged with each passing day.
It’s so refreshing to see a zombie film that takes SFX inspiration from such iconic films such as Zombie, Dawn Of The Dead, and Day Of The Dead. Although the film was released in 2015 the makeup, characters, and music take you back to the 1980’s when zombie films were so pure and magical, before becoming tainted with over-saturation and repetitive story lines.
One of my favorite aspects of this film is how quickly the infection spreads from person to person. It allows us to see the difference between the living and the dead in a way that is awe-inspiring. Cara Carter (Alex Elliot), one of the doctor's daughters, quickly became my favorite character in the film. I loved her personality and the way her story arc changed from the beginning to end.
If you’re a fan of cheesy horror flicks that still find a way to be witty and independent in the horror scene, I think you’ll really enjoy Dead Inferno! I give the film 10/10 brains for great character development, music, scenery, insane gore (courtesy of Joh Harp FX), and originality.
