[Review] Tapio Kauma's 'Medicated' Is A Fun, Action Packed Fantasy Thriller

Medicated (Lääkekoe) Tapio Kauma Review

After taking part in a medical experiment forced upon him by his brother Kartsa, Korppainen (both played by writer/director Tapio Kauma) enters another dimension through his dreams. It isn’t long before he discovers that these dreams have escaped his mind and are now here in the real world. The longer he’s exposed to the serum used in the experiment the more we learn about Korppainen and his checkered past. Will he ever escape the visions in his mind or will he succumb to his inner demons?

It's not often that I review a film with little to no budget. I have a lot of respect for any artist who pursues their passion. With that being said, I think the concept of this film is unique. It’s an idea I haven’t seen executed before. Unfortunately, I think there’s a reason for that. I can’t tell if it’s the writing or the acting but a lot of scenes feel very forced, which is a shame because if they had been approached in a more relaxed manner I think this movie would have worked better. I did enjoy some of the plot twists found within this film. It definitely adds an element of surprise to the story. I also liked the music that was used. It’s very subtle in most of the scenes but I think with the tone of the project anything else would have overshadowed the characters and their story.

Medicated (aka Lääkekoe) is good for what it is. It’s a fun, action packed fantasy horror film. If you’re looking for something that requires you to keep an open mind I think you may like Medicated. If you’re a horror enthusiast who’s films must meet certain criteria I don’t think this is the right fit for you. With a larger budget and more experience I believe director Tapio Kauma could create something truly special. I give Medicated a 4/10. Although I don’t think this film is for me, I can certainly appreciate the time and effort that was put into it. I look forward to seeing future projects from Tapio Kauma. I’d be interested to see how his abilities will improve when he has more ground to work with.
