Red Dead Redemption II is the current spotlight for Rockstar Games, and their wildly popular Red Dead Online has helped build on the online multiplayer base that the studio began with in Grand Theft Auto V. Dropping last October, the expansive open world game won over fans on console, sweeping numerous Game of the Year awards and becoming the highest-rated game on PlayStation. As we draw closer to October, though, several players are reporting some peculiar sightings in-game, sightings which may shed some light on things to come for an already impressive title.
The story begins with the recent Frontier Pursuits expansion. Since its launch a couple weeks ago, Reddit users such as u/xXVoluntaryeyeXx and u/GroatsActive have posted screenshots which show some in-game NPCs with greyed, decaying skin and glowing yellow eyes. In the single player campaign, a couple of reports of a “mysterious illness” are not followed up on, but with these recent sightings, the rumor mill is alive and well that we may be seeing a follow-up to a spinoff.
October 26, 2010, eight years prior to the release of the second Redemption game, the original Red Dead Redemption got a zombie expansion, titled Undead Nightmare. The spinoff is a damn fun zombie game with a Western twist, doubling down on the open world sandbox of the Wild West. Given that the newest installment released eight years to the day after the Undead Nightmare expansion, it is entirely possible that Rockstar knows precisely what they’re doing and when to reveal it.
Given that the sightings were in the online component, there is some speculation that this will lead to an event in the online portion. More hopeful fans are hoping for a full-fledged follow-up to Undead Nightmare, which would be nothing short of staggering, given the impressive length and depth of the base game as it stands. While Rockstar has shown, through GTA Online, that they’re not afraid to drop a caravan’s worth of post-launch content, time will tell what comes next.
