Metalcore giants Atreyu have not had a great time as of late, specifically following their more post-hardcore leaning 2018 disc In Our Wake. Frontman Alex Varkatzas was rumored to have left the band earlier this year, with those fears confirmed last month. Fortunately, bassist Porter McKnight stepped up and took over the unclean vocal duties, while Brandon Saller, the band’s longtime clean vocalist and drummer, stepped out from behind the kit to take fronting duties, while naming Kyle Rosa, with whom Saller has worked with under the Hell or Highwater banner, took over drumming.
By the sounds of things, the split was amicable, and we hope that Varkatzas does well with whatever his next step may be, but as for Atreyu, the show goes on, as the band has revealed the single “Save Us,” their first since the shake-up. Saller does well as the leader of the band, with McKnight’s growls and screams adding that tinge of core that Atreyu helped craft over their twenty-plus years in the game. The song is very much in the vein of the aforementioned In Our Wake, while also evoking memories of tracks like “Ex’s and Oh’s.”
The only real complaint to be had with the track is that it’s too damn short, even by Atreyu standards. At two minutes and twenty seconds, it’s one of the band’s shortest songs in their extensive catalog, but as a taste of an as-yet-untitled eighth album, it’s gonna be a fun ride. The band has confirmed that John Feldmann, who produced both 2007’s Lead Sails Paper Anchor and In Our Wake, will produce the next album as well.
