On her reflective and vicious album God Has Nothing To Do With This Leave Him Out of It, Zambian-cum-Canadian rapper Backxwash wove tales of unease and uncertainty, spitting the hottest of bars all the way. This record landed her the 2020 Polaris Music Prize, an award given to the best Canadian-made album, decided by a jury of journalists, bloggers, and other programmers. The record is jarring and spellbinding, and makes for a stirring listen if you haven’t already gotten hip to it.
Now, with the help of Mechant Vaporwave, Backxwash has released a music video for the swaying track “Spells,” which features vocalist Devi McCallion. In it, Backxwash herself dons the crown of thorns as she does on the album’s cover, while Devi’s visuals use tricks and doubling to create a dizzying experience, even for those of us who do not suffer from photosensitivity. The video is simple yet effective, just like the shoegaze-inspired track that is its source material.
