clipping. Pay Homage to the Queen of 'Scream' with "'96 Neve Campbell" [Video]

With their new album Visions of Bodies Being Burned coming up in just a month’s time, clipping. have seen fit to release the next single from said album, after the straight fire that was “Say the Name” came out just a few short weeks ago. With the new track “‘96 Neve Campbell,” the horror-inspired hip-hop trio pay their tributes to one of horror cinema’s most enduring final girls and scream queens, Sidney Prescott herself, Neve Campbell.

The song is three and a half minutes of visceral, percussive hip-hop, singing the praises of Campbell’s character, all while maintaining the same self-awareness and irreverence that made Scream such a roaring, game-changing success. Cam & China add a badass edge to the song with their bars, dropping references and wordplay like their lives depend on it. Of particular interest for the diehard fans of the Wes Craven masterwork is Daveed Diggs’ final verse:

“Do you like scary movies, what's your favorite?

That phone sex the problem you should stay with

The pillow talking can get you carted away quick

You murder artists come harder shouldn't say shit

Lest you ready to back up why you play with

The fairer sex fairly quick get your brain split

Full sets stuck in your chest with grace

'96 Neve Campbell, the TV set on your face, shit”

The lyric video sees the lyrics appear word by word in a ransom-note, pieced together style, all while clips of the horror classic play in the background. All the while, the video has a lo-fi, VCR look to it, playing up the nostalgia and the love of the old school.

Visions of Bodies Being Burned is due out on October 23rd via Sub Pop Records.
