Since 2012, the team of Emily Kavanaugh and Mark Brooks have put out several EPs and LPs’ worth of sugary-sweet dark pop music under the moniker Night Club. With club-ready hits like “Bad Girl” and “Freak Like Me,” the twosome have made goth look good, and sound even better. Just before their first studio album, 2016’s Requiem for Romance, they were tapped to provide the soundtrack for the Rob Lowe-starring comedy series Moonbeam City.
Now, the group have announced their third studio album, entitled Die Die Lullaby, set to be released on October 9th. Keeping with the simplistic album art motif, the cover for this latest effort is a pink coffin featuring the crossed-out heart that also graced the band’s previous album, 2018’s Scary World. One option for the pre-order features a limited edition purple vinyl, keeping things sleek and straightforward.
The first sampling of Die Die Lullaby comes with the song “Miss Negativity.” It’s a swaying synthpop affair with notes of post-punk and old-school goth. It’s an upbeat track about self-loathing and self-fulfilling prophecies, another addition to the list of songs that sound so nice, but the lyrics are actually rather grim. Spoiler alert, Night Club could fill out a top 10 list of said topic rather easily, and that is not a complaint.
