Finland's Cynabare Urne Announce 'Obsidian Daggers and Cinnabar Skulls' for Samhain Release

After two extended plays under their belts, Finland’s death/doom trio Cynabare Urne is set to release their debut full-length Obsidian Daggers and Cinnabar Skulls this Samhain, October 30th, via Regain Records, as part of Helter Skelter Productions. The tale of Cynabare Urne begins with their 2014 formation, as its members came from bands such as Absent Silence, Drown Me Blue, and Horizon of the Mute, among many others. Their 2016 debut EP Fire the Torches saw bassist/drummer Sameli Kokkya and vocalist/guitarist Jani Koskela band together, but for 2018’s In the Cremation Ground, Kokkya handed over drumming duties to Ville Salonen.

Now, Obsidian Daggers and Cinnabar Skulls is set to be an inferno of a debut record from the Finnish three. There have been two tracks released from the effort thus far, the blast-beat-laden “Erida Evoken” and the thrash-influenced “Last of the Icons Alive.” The band describes their sound as “neither strictly old-school nor new-school,” and that’s a fair assessment. The overall production feels ever so slightly raw and unfiltered, but the instrumentation sounds crisp, and Koskela’s vocals sound clear and crushing.

For modern death metal, these two songs were great fun, and give us another thing to look forward to this Samhain.
