This year, several horror classics, including Halloween, The Evil Dead, and Zombie, have made their triumphant returns to drive-in theaters across the country, and we've now learned that George A. Romero's game-changing zombie classic Night of the Living Dead will be doing the same beginning later this month!
Grindhouse Releasing and Janus Films have teamed up to present the latter of the duos new 4K restoration of the film for a screening tour coming to drive-ins across the country, including one near Pittsburgh!
The screenings will also include a new introduction on its legacy from author Daniel Kraus, who co-wrote the newly-released novel The Living Dead with Romero himself.
Thus far, only three screenings have been announced:
August 22 – Prides Corner Drive-In, Westbrook, Maine
August 28-29 – Riverside Drive-In, Vandergrift, PA (screening as a double feature with The Evil Dead)
September 19 – Midway Drive-In, Sterling, IL (as part of the Dusk to Dawn Horror Show)
One of the most influential films of all time, Night of the Living Dead tells a deceptively simple tale of a group of strangers trapped in a farmhouse who find themselves fending off a horde of recently dead, flesh-eating ghouls, Romero’s claustrophobic vision of a late-1960s America literally tearing itself apart rewrote the rules of the horror genre, combined gruesome gore with acute social commentary, and quietly broke ground by casting a black actor (Duane Jones) in its lead role.
