We’ve been hearing rumblings of a covers album from the nu metal progenitors Korn for ages now, and even if that never comes to fruition, we can’t say we didn’t get some semblance. Today, the Bakersfield five-piece put out a cover of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” the legendary country tune about fiddles and fire by The Charlie Daniels Band. With singer Jonathan Davis playing the role of The Devil and Alabama’s own Yelawolf playing Johnny, the cover is a fun one, but a damn weird one, if we’re being honest.
While the song is obviously made on the fiddle parts, hearing these parts on guitars elevates them. Hearing these parts played by Korn is just weird, as the band spearheaded a genre of music that was so anti-guitar solos, it was hardly funny. It doesn’t totally ruin the song for me, but it sticks out enough that I can’t quite get over it. That said, hearing the vocal combination of Davis and Yelawolf was fun, and the drumming of Ray Luzier is always a plus in my book.
This collaboration isn’t just for shits and giggles, though, as all of the proceeds are going to Awakening Youth, a nonprofit that works with youth who have lost contact with a parent, either by divorce, addiction, death, or otherwise. Add to this the fact that Charlie Daniels himself passed away on July 6th of this year, and the cover’s timing makes total sense.
