Mortal Kombat 11 was an achievement for fighting games upon its release one year ago. Series co-creator Ed Boon recently revealed on Twitter that the latest installment in the iconic franchise ranked fifth among the top ten best-selling games of last year, and reputation aside, the game was a stacked offering from launch. Its cinematic, timeline-altering story mode gave us Kronika, a villain that gives her counterparts a run for their money. The Krypt was expanded to a third-person adventure mode with even more lore to be found amongst all of the unlockable goodies. The crossover guest characters Spawn, The Terminator, and The Joker continued in the 2011 reboot’s tradition of adding legendary characters to the Kombat roster.
Enter “Aftermath,” the new expansion to the already rich Mortal Kombat 11. The cornerstone offering is a new cinematic story mode, following the conclusion of the main story. Without spoiling said story for those who have not yet, the continuation sees Shang Tsung insisting that things are not entirely fixed up, and that there’s only a matter of time before the centerpiece that is Kronika’s hourglass creates more problems for the Earthrealm champion.
Three new Kombatants will join the deep roster in “Aftermath,” including the Shokan warrior queen Sheeva, god of wind Fujin, and, in a reveal that elicited a visceral reaction from just about everyone, RoboCop. The cyborg once known as Alex Murphy is set to become the fourth guest fighter of the title, and if such an inclusion has you wondering if you’ll buy that for a dollar, that’s fair. No word yet if anyone gets shot in the dick, but I hold hope for that in his Fatal Blow, at the very least.
The expansion is available for pre-order now, at a $40 price point. Starting May 26th, all players will get an update including new stages, stage Fatalities, and the return of Friendships. On that same date, the expansion goes live, and Kombat is rewritten once again.
Mortal Kombat 11 is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch and Google Stadia.
