Post-genre music is prime territory for mindfucks, both in the aural and visual components. There’s loads of room for experimentation when one chucks the rulebook out the window after marking up all of the pages to the point of illegibility. Belgium’s own Obsidian Kingdom write with not ink, but blood, and plenty of it is spilled in the running of their horrific music video for the new song “The Pump.”
The video, created by Jakov Burov, features Frankenstein’s monsters of characters, stitched up from body parts of countless cadavers. Visually, it is the stuff of body horror nightmares, with animation that would make David Cronenberg himself grin from ear to ear, assuming those weren’t parts of the creatures of the video as well. The song sounds like the progressive sludge of bands such as Mastodon with the ferocity of Gojira, with huge riffs and fill-happy drumming. On both counts, the execution is experimental and very much not by the book, and on those same counts, the result is gruesome and awesome.
Obsidian Kingdom’s new album Meat Machine is due out on Season of Mist on September 25th, and the tracklisting reads as such:
1. THE EDGE
2. THE PUMP
3. MR PAN
4. NAKED POLITICS
5. FLESH WORLD
6. MEAT STAR
7. SPANKER
8. VOGUE
9. WOMB OF WIRE
10. A FOE
