Promising an in-depth look at the 1990 mini-series based on Stephen King’s novel, the highly-anticipated documentary Pennywise: The Story of IT will finally be released for North American horror fans this July after being picked up by Cinedigm back in March of this year.
Dread Central broke the news earlier this week, revealing that Pennywise: The Story of IT is headed to select theaters beginning July 8th before arriving on VOD platforms and Cinedigm’s horror streaming service Screambox on July 26th.
Check out the trailer and more details on the film below.
The documentary has had quite a long-winded journey to get to this point, but we're very excited to see it finally getting a full release. Pennywise: The Story of IT world premiered at the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival in Spain and had its UK premiere at FrightFest back in October before arriving in the US, where it premiered at Panic Fest back in May.
Over thirty years after its TV premiere, the first official adaptation of IT is now part of our popular imaginary. The miniseries directed by Tommy Lee Wallace introduced Pennywise, one of Stephen King's most terrifying creations. This documentary takes a look back at the miniseries' creation and legacy with a wealth of archival material and never-before-seen footage, and the presence of Tim Curry, Pennywise himself.
"Pennywise: The Story of IT captures not only the spark the IT saga created when it was released but also the lasting impact it has had on an entire generation and the horror genre at large."
Several years in the making, Pennywise: The Story of IT features exclusive interviews with many of the cult classic’s key players, from cast members Richard Thomas, Emily Perkins, Richard Masur, Seth Green, and the legendary Tim Curry, to director Tommy Lee Wallace and special effects makeup artist Bart Mixon, as well as an exploration of what went into creating the IT films, including casting, production, and practical effects.
"From red balloons to yellow rain jackets, the groundbreaking miniseries pushed boundaries and still has a lasting impact on the genre to this day," said Cinedigm’s Yolanda Macias back in March. "Even three decades after its release, It and the child-eating clown Pennywise scares audiences of all ages. We are excited to take horror fans on this terrifying journey back to the not so sleepy town of Derry."
Co-directed by John Campopiano (Unearthed & Untold: The Path to Pet Sematary) and Christopher Griffiths (Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser), Pennywise: The Story of IT was produced by Campopiano, Gary Smart, Adam Evans, Michael Perez, and Hank Starrs. Executive producers are Laurence Gornall, Brady William Dorman, Michael Leavy, and Jason Leavy.
