Akin to its horror-comedy predecessors of the 80’s and 90’s, Psycho Goreman blends sci-fi-horror-fantasy with the children’s adventure movies of the same era. It’s tongue and cheek storytelling is multiplied by the moments of ultra-violence we also enjoyed during that era. Cornball delivery with a psychotic attitude. Pun intended.
Psycho Goreman starts with a pair of rambunctious siblings digging up an amulet that unleashes and controls the lost alien monster that they appropriately name, Psycho Goreman... or PG for short. One can probably imagine the kind of ride that comes thereafter. The movie is a refreshing twisted take on wholesome family fun; that ‘Return To Oz’ crossed with ‘Class of Nuke’m High’ look with a contemporary sheen. If you don’t get these references, I guess I just feel sorry for you. Psycho Goreman is rich with nostalgic touchstones of the era.
If ‘Suburban Commando’ and ‘Masters of The Universe’ were a bad acid trip that aired on Nickelodeon’s ‘Are You Afraid of The Dark,’ you might get close. This is the family movie night VHS our arguably fucked up parents were pleasantly surprised they rented at Blockbuster.
