Today marks the official release of the Silent Hill chapter in Dead by Daylight, as well as the host of new updates to the wildly popular asymmetrical survival horror game. The fourth anniversary of the game’s release was just two days ago, on the 14th of June, and year five comes with not just the blockbuster licensed chapter, but graphical updates to the entire game, as highlighted in the anniversary livestream a couple weeks ago.
The 4.0.0 patch notes cover several exploits and bugs in maps, including collisions and impassable barriers. Balance-wise, the main fix is to The Clown, who will no longer be slowed when he throws his bottles of The Afterpiece Tonic. For the full list of patch notes, check out the Dead by Daylight forum.
The new trial grounds for the chapter is Midwich Elementary School, the traumatizing setting that appears throughout the seminal survival horror franchise. From the original "battle mode" demo to the battle with Split Head, Midwich is steeped in lore of the mysterious fog-laden town, and now our favorite Killers will carry out the will of The Entity in those hallowed halls.
The new Killer is Pyramid Head, known in The Fog as “The Executioner,” using his Rites of Judgment power to cause a new status effect called Torment. Downing a Tormented Survivor allows Pyramid Head to skip carrying the Survivor to a Hook, and instead place them in a Cage of Atonement. In phase two of the Sacrifice, the Survivor will have to complete Skill Checks instead of mashing a button or key to keep The Entity at bay. While he carves out paths of Torment with Rites of Judgment, Pyramid Head can also use a front-facing wave attack called Punishment of the Damned to damage Survivors.
Pyramid Head’s perks are all about punishment. Forced Penance inflicts the Broken status effect on a Survivor taking a protection hit, leaving the Survivor unable to heal for a short time. Trail of Torment grants the Undetectable status effect after breaking a Generator, while revealing the busted machine to the Survivors. Deathbound rats out a healing Survivor to the Killer, leaving the Survivor Oblivious if they stray too far away from their healer.
The new Survivor in this chapter is Cheryl Mason, the daughter of Silent Hill’s Harry Mason, and the protagonist of the third game. Her perks focus on her familiarity with calamity, as well her connection to the supernatural terrors that she’s fought off before. Soul Guard gives her a few seconds of Endurance after healing from the Dying State, and even allows her to heal herself completely if a Hex is active, thus adding the Cursed status effect to Survivors. Blood Pact only works if Cheryl is not the Obsession, as it creates a link between herself and the Obsession. If either one is healed, they both gain the Haste status effect briefly. Repressed Alliance is an odd perk, as it blocks a Generator per the Survivor’s request and reveals it in white to the other Survivors.
