The release of the new Smashing Pumpkins album is drawing closer, as Cyr is due out via Sumerian Records on Black Friday, November 27th. Thus far, we’ve gotten a glimpse of what is set to be a twenty-track double album in the form of six unique tracks: first was the title track and “The Colour of Love,” then the “Confessions of a Dopamine Addict” and “Wrath,” and after that came “Anno Satana” and “Birch Grove.” From synthpop-inspired grooves to alt-rock anthems, these six tracks run a gamut of sounds that make pinning down a mood board for Cyr damn near impossible.
As if all of that wasn’t enough, the alt-rock icons have given us two new singles to chew on, “Ramona” and “Wyttch.” The former is a power ballad, with an active synth presence and a rock backbone, complete with a picturesque music video directed by Linda Strawberry. It has a sway about it that makes it accessible, with enough uncanny features and Corgan’s legendary tenor to make it firmly SP. In contrast, “Wyttch” feels like classic, rock-forward SP, with layers of guitars and a metallic bite to the whole affair, and we’ll set aside the egregious mispronunciation of Samhain aside for now. The music video for the track, directed by Charlotte Kemp Muhl, is a series of psychedelic visuals tied together in a very loose narrative arc, though one image that will stick with me longer than it has any right to is bearded WPC.
