It’s no secret how influential the seminal speculative television series The Twilight Zone has been on all forms of media, much less the visual arts. The long-running anthology series paved the way for scores of music, film, and literature that dealt in the strange and supernatural, and one such piece directly influenced by the Rod Serling staple is the new single “The Fever,” done by Rani Sharone under his Thrillsville moniker.
Sharone may best be known for his work with the dark cabaret band Stolen Babies, but his collaborative efforts have been heard with acts like Puscifer, Marilyn Manson, and Tyler Bates. He also scored the animated film My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea, which can be seen on Netflix. Performing as Thrillsville since 2017, he has a number of singles, an EP, and multiple soundtrack credits to his name already, and things are only heating up for Sharone, it would seem.
“The Fever” is a smooth, swaying industrial pop number, with Sharone’s low voice singing over a simple, slow groove of diminished, palm-muted guitars, synths that creep along before acting up with a brief arpeggio, and an echoing snare that plants the industrial flag into this dark pop ground. The lyrics deal in addiction and obsession, something which the 1960 Twilight Zone episode of the same name covered.
