While he did not invent the industrial music movement, Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails helped to popularize the darker side of electronic music. His prolific career has taken him to scoring films as well, including the American adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network, and Patriots Day, alongside longtime collaborator and NIN cohort Atticus Ross.
For the 93rd Annual Academy Awards, colloquially known as the Oscars, the duo are nominated for two of their scores. Of the five films nominated for Best Original Score, Ross and Reznor composed two of them: Disney/Pixar’s tribute to jazz Soul and David Fincher’s biopic Mank. Soul has three total nominations, while Mank has ten nominations in total, the highest for this year’s ceremony.
The other nominees are Da 5 Bloods (Terence Blanchard), Minari (Emile Mosseri), and News of the World (James Newton Howard).
The ceremony will take place on Sunday, April 25th, and air live on ABC. For those looking, Soul is streaming exclusively on Disney+, while Mank is currently streaming on Netflix.
In the meantime, check out “Epiphany” from Soul and “All This Time (Happily Ever After)” from Mank.
