After a knock-out covers collection of Halloween classics, including an Iron Maiden-style “Dead Man’s Party,” a hardcore punk-style “Halloween II,” and a damn faithful rendition of “Over the Mountain,” it’s time to ring in the holidays, as only Two Minutes to Late Night can. Brought to us via host Gwarsenio Hall, the metal late night show’s latest bedroom cover is a manic interpretation of King Diamond’s classic song “No Presents for Christmas.” Reprising vocal duties from the aforementioned Ozzy Osbourne cover is Mastodon’s Brann Dailor, who dons the corpse paint and a candy cane version of King’s iconic crossed bones mic stand. On guitars and further corpse paint duty is Brendon Small, the creative force behind Dethklok (Metalocalypse) and Galaktikon, doing his best to imitate the unique soloing style of longtime King Diamond guitarist Andy LaRocque and his signature warbling whammy bar antics. Rounding out the band is Nick Cageao of Mutoid Man and Dave Witte of Municipal Waste and Brain Tentacles.
The song is rife with interpolations of holiday classics, such as Bruce Springsteen’s version of “Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town” and Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock,” as well as a brief interlude of Black Sabbath’s “N.I.B.” for thematic reasons. Cut between various performance shots are scenes of various holiday films, namely Edward Scissorhands and Disney’s A Christmas Carol.
