After seeing the wide variety of songs and genres that the makeshift supergroups made by Two Minutes to Late Night, it’s a wonder I didn’t find this show on the Internet sooner. Since quarantine began, Gwarsenio Hall and his house band Mutoid Man have virtually collaborated with a who’s who of hard rock and heavy metal, ranging from all subgenres and decades. The goal? Breathe new life into some of our time-tested favorites, and put money in the coffers of the musicians that are unable to tour during this time, or for the foreseeable future, for that matter.
For the twenty-sixth in their Bedroom Covers series, the selection is “Spooky,” originally by Dusty Springfield and made further famous by Classics IV. Here we get Steve Broadsky (Mutoid Man, Cave In, Old Man Gloom), Coady Willis (Big Business, Melvines, Murder City Devils), Marissa Nadler (Droneflower), Dylan Carlson (Earth), and Emily Lee (Shearwater, Loma, Snake Oil). The resulting track is somewhere between sludge and psychedelia, as if The Doors met Electric Wizard and got zonked out of their minds, and the video has the visuals to match such a trip.
