Oh, bother...
A.A. Milne’s original "Winnie the Pooh" stories only just entered the public domain at the beginning of the year, and there's already a horror movie based on the tubby yellow teddy bear in the works.
Titled Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, the slasher film wrapped production earlier this month under the direction of Rhys Frake-Waterfield, and the folks at Dread Central have shared a handful of stills, which preview the film's murderous Pooh and Piglet.
Waterfield, who also wrote and co-produced the film, offered up some details on the film's twisted plot in an interview with Variety.
After being abandoned by a college-bound Christopher Robin, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey will follow main villains Pooh and Piglet, who are on a rampage. "Christopher Robin is pulled away from them, and he’s not [given] them food, it’s made Pooh and Piglet’s life quite difficult," Waterfield explained. "Because they’ve had to fend for themselves so much, they’ve essentially become feral. So they’ve gone back to their animal roots. They’re no longer tame: they’re like a vicious bear and pig who want to go around and try and find prey."
Of course, Disney isn't involved with this production in any way, shape or form, and the director has addressed the possibility of the mass media giant stepping in and shutting things down. "We’ve tried to be extremely careful. We knew there was this line between that, and we knew what their copyright was and what they’ve done. So we did as much as we could to make sure [the film] was only based on the 1926 version of it."
He adds, "No one is going to mistake this [for Disney]. When you see the cover for this and you see the trailers and the stills and all that, there’s no way anyone is going to think this is a child’s version of it."
Waterfield also revealed in his chat with Variety that Tigger and Eeyore won’t appear in the movie due to copyright issues, "although there is a scene featuring Eeyore’s tombstone, the miserable donkey having been eaten by a starving Pooh and Piglet."
Amber Doig-Thorne, Maria Taylor, and Danielle Scott star in the film, which was shot in England in just 10 days.
From Jagged Edge Productions, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey has been acquired for distribution by ITN Studios. A release date has yet to be announced.
