Microsoft got the jump on Sony earlier today by revealing the release date and price points for their next generation of consoles.
They announced that the previously revealed Xbox Series X and the newly-revealed variation, the Xbox Series S, will be arriving in stores on November 10th. Pre-orders for both consoles will begin on September 22nd.
Taking aim at both ends of the market, the more powerful Series X will be priced at $499, with a $35 per month Xbox All Access financing option, and the entry-level Series S will cost $299, with a slightly cheaper $25 per month financing option. Both financing options run for 24 months and include Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and EA Play.
Xbox Series S specs include:
Nearly 60 percent smaller than Xbox Series X
1440p resolution at up to 120 frames per second
DirectX ray tracing
Variable rate shading
Variable refresh rate
Ultra-low latency
Custom 512 GB NVME SSD powered by Xbox Velocity Architecture
4K streaming media playback
4K upscaling for games
It's worth noting that the Series S will not feature a disc drive and will be incapable of playing physical games, but with the way things are going for the physical media market in recent years, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Hard drive space, on the other hand, may be a valid concern.
"We believe that access to the next generation should be available to everyone. And we know that price is an important factor for many of our fans," said Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer. "To complement Xbox Series X and invite more players into the next generation sooner, we built Xbox Series S—an all-digital, next-gen console designed to deliver everything that is core to next-generation gaming – faster load times, higher frame rates, and richer, more dynamic worlds – in our smallest, sleekest Xbox ever. Developing two consoles in parallel from the beginning enables us to deliver the most powerful console ever in Xbox Series X and make next-gen gaming available and affordable to more players on day one with Xbox Series S."
Sony has yet to reveal the price for the PlayStation 5, which is also expected to be available in two versions, an all-digital version and one with a disc drive. However, the company will likely make an announcement soon in order to keep up with Microsoft.
