Dwayne Johnson's 'Big Trouble In Little China' Isn't A Remake But A Continuation

It's been quite some time since hearing any updates on the supposed Big Trouble In Little China remake starring Dwayne Johnson, not that I even really cared to hear anything about it. I have no interest in seeing Carpenter's masterpiece being destroyed. Recently, an update has surfaced and I'm now more at ease, it just so happens the film isn't a remake but a continuation!

Collider recently spoke with Hiram Garcia, one of the producers on Big Trouble in Little China, in an attempt to find out how this film will differ from John Carpenter's classic.

“There’s a lot of things going on with [Big Trouble in Little China]. We are in the process of developing that, and let me tell you, the idea is not to actually remake Big Trouble in Little China. You can’t remake a classic like that, so what we’re planning to do is we’re going to continue the story. We’re going to continue the universe of Big Trouble in Little China. Everything that happened in the original exists and is standalone and I think there’s only one person that could ever play Jack Burton, so Dwayne would never try and play that character. So we are just having a lot of fun. We’re actually in a really great space with the story that we’ve cracked. But yeah, no remake. It is a continuation, and we are deep into development on that as well, and I think you’ll start hearing some things about that probably soon.”

The direction they're choosing to take is a very smart one, there's only one Jack Burton and that's Kurt Russell. I'm very happy to hear that this will be an expansion on Carpenter's universe and I'm rather looking forward to it. I enjoyed Dwayne Johnson's role enough in Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to give him another chance.

When (and if) the new Big Trouble in Little China will happen is unknown but likely far in the future as Johnson is currently shooting Disney’s Jungle Cruise and will then move directly into the Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw, then next year he’s due to shoot the highly anticipated Jumanji sequel and the original thriller Red Notice with Gal Gadot and Skyscraper director Rawson Marshall Thurber.
