Success may be the best revenge, but for Shudder, Revenge is nothing less than a record-setting success. Since its debut on the service last Thursday, the hypnotic and stylish thriller from first-time director Coralie Fargeat has become the most-watched film premiere in Shudder’s history by a wide margin.
Revenge was the No. 1 movie premiere on both Shudder U.S. and Shudder Canada, and the most reviewed film on Shudder during an opening weekend. It currently has a 5 out of 5 skulls rating from Shudder members (skulls are the Shudder equivalent of stars).
Mainstream critics love Revenge too. It has a 93% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an 81% “must-see” rating on Metacritic, and everyone from The New York Times to Vogue has been heaping praise on it.
“…an incredibly stylish exercise in horror filmmaking…” – The Atlantic
“Blunt, bloody and stylish.” – The New York Times
“The bloodiest - and most important – film released this year.” - Esquire
“A kick in the balls with a feminist combat boot.” — Rolling Stone
“REVENGE is an Exploitation Movie for the #MeToo Era” — Vogue
Stars like Elizabeth Banks, Patton Oswalt, Seth Rogen and Elijah Wood have been taken with the film as well:
While streaming services don't release viewer numbers, Shudder GM Craig Engler noted, "Revenge has blown away all our previous records and has been resonating with both critics and audiences alike. It’s a stunning and powerful debut from director Coralie Fargeat with a breathtaking performance from Matilda Lutz that makes it one of the year’s must-see movies."
Lutz plays Jen, a woman forced to seek righteous vengeance after being left for dead by her millionaire boyfriend and his hunting buddies. Critics have been won over by the film and its smart subversion of the usual rape-revenge movie tropes since its world premiere at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
Shudder picked up all rights to Revenge in US, Canada and UK prior to its TIFF premiere last year. It partnered with Neon for the theatrical and On Demand release in North America earlier this year.
