With a staggering $77.5 million debut, Universal and Blumhouse's Halloween has already claimed the title of the highest grossing film in the 40-year franchise and the second best all-time opening weekend for October, behind Sony's Venom. Unfortunately, the Halloween reboot wasn't successful overseas as it's symbiotic competition, bringing in only $14.3 million overseas, totaling a $91.8 million global take. Venom had a $200 million global opening weekend.
Best of all, Halloween was created on a budget of $40 million, so the film has already doubled the money needed to become massive success. This means great things are most likely in store for the franchise's future! The horror community continues to show Hollywood that we are insanely passionate about our beloved genre. Horror is booming and we're loving it!
In a statement, producer Jason Blum, who is seeing the best opening ever in U.S./Canada for his Blumhouse label, said, “The reception of fans and critics alike is a huge endorsement of the Blumhouse model. Combining legendary source material, the participation of original creators and a fresh take from talented directors and writers who don’t normally do horror films, Halloween brings the franchise back to life in a fresh, relevant and fun way.”
