Love it or hate it, Hereditary made a huge impact on the horror genre when it released earlier this year. In my opinion and the opinion of others, it's the scariest film since The Exorcist. You will most certainly be seeing it on most (if not all) year-end best-of 2018 horror lists. Hereditary is a film that deserves to be studied and there's no better way to study a film than to read its screenplay.
Screenwriting is very much an underappreciated craft that deserves more recognition than it receives. If you're like me and many others who like to read screenplays in order to dive deeper into the subtext of a film or if you'd just like to see how the script compares to the film, you'll definitely want to take this opportunity to read Ari Aster's Hereditary script. Recently uploaded to ScriptSlug, Aster's script is an award-worthy treasure for hardcore fans of the film. Hereditary is a definite masterpiece and you can expect to see it nominated for (and hopefully win) multiple Academy Awards, one of which should be for best original screenplay, If you're an aspiring writer or just want to get inside Aster's mind, I urge you to read this script! Read it here.
If you've yet to see the film, the trailer and synopsis have been posted below.
"When the matriarch of the Graham family passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin to unravel cryptic and increasingly terrifying secrets about their ancestry, trying to outrun the sinister fate they have inherited."
