Johannes Roberts To Write And Direct 'Resident Evil' Movie Reboot

Get ready for the Resident Evil film franchise to be scary again! Constantin Films has hired filmmaker Johannes Roberts, creator of 47 Meters Down and The Strangers: Prey At Night, to write and direct their Resident Evil movie reboot based on Capcom's popular video game franchise. Variety reported this news earlier today.

The franchise followed Alice, played by Milla Jovovich, as she fights not only the zombies terrorizing Raccoon City after an experiment gone wrong, but the evil Umbrella Corp., which is the cause of the disastrous state. The films began as horror back in 2002 and slowly shifted more towards action and sci-fi.

Last week, screenwriter Greg Russo talked about the screenplay with DiscussingFilm and promised a return to horror roots.

“Obviously, I’m a huge fan of the franchise so to work on that was a lot of fun,” said Russo. “For me it was very clear-cut that I wanted to go back and make it scary again like a horror film in terms of the classic James Wan-style so that was the pitch, going back and looking what made the games scary in the first place so yea Resident Evil 7 was a bit of a touchstone for my draft.”

It was reported that James Wan would produce the movie through his Atomic Monster label, but there was no mention of this in the article. It's quite possible that he's no longer involved.

Production on the new film is set to begin in 2019. We'll keep CryptTeaze readers up to date on the film as it develops.
