As a nice little Christmas treat, Universal has unwrapped the first trailer for Jordan Peele's Us.
Last year, Jordan Peele sent shockwaves across contemporary culture and set a new standard for provocative, socially-conscious horror films with his directorial debut, Get Out. Now he returns with another original nightmare.
Set in present day along the iconic Northern California coastline, Us follows Adelaide Wilson (Lupita Nyong’o), a woman returning to her beachside childhood home with her husband, Gabe (Black Panther’s Winston Duke), and their two children for an idyllic summer getaway. Haunted by an unexplainable and unresolved trauma from her past, Adelaide feels her paranoia elevate to high-alert as she grows increasingly certain that something bad is going to befall her family.
After spending a tense beach day with their friends, Adelaide and her family return to their vacation home. When darkness falls, the Wilsons discover the silhouette of four figures holding hands as they stand in the driveway...
“[Us] turns into this relentless nightmare that taps into [Adelaide’s] deepest fears and ours as well — the idea that we might be our own worst enemies,” Nyong'o told Entertainment Weekly.
“For my second feature, I wanted to create a monster mythology,” added Peele. “I wanted to do something that was more firmly in the horror genre but still held on to my love of movies that are twisted but fun.”
While Peele and the film's cast are rather tight-lipped on any further details, it was revealed that the monsters in the film are called The Tethered.
Written and directed by Peele, Us also stars Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Anna Diop, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Evan Alex, Madison Curry, Cali Sheldon and Noelle Sheldon.
Universal has dated the film for a March 15th, 2019 theatrical release.
