It's definitely the year of Scary Stories, with a feature film and documentary on the way, Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books are making a strong comeback for 2019. And today we've learned of a new project on the way in the form a fan made book titled Scary Stories: A Tribute to Terror. which features original stories and illustrations inspired by Schwartz and Stephen Gammell’s nightmare inducing creations.
“This collaboration of writer Curt Tuckfield and illustrator Shane Hunt (artist for the Scary Stories documentary) brings to life a new collection of stories which meticulously pay tribute to the work and style of writer Alvin Schwartz and illustrator Stephen Gammell. As of fall of 2018, over 30 stories have been written and over 50 pieces of art have been created.”
“As kids, Curt and I were traumatized in the best way by the Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark books. They horrified and delighted us," Hunt explains. "In early 2016, we decided if anyone was going to make another Scary Stories book it would have to be us. We have spent hundreds of hours analyzing the writing style of Alvin Schwartz and the art of Stephen Gammell. This project is the culmination of that effort. Our goal in making this book was simple; to scare ourselves. We made this book because we wanted it. We knew that if we didn’t feel like it was an authentic Scary Stories experience, then no one else would either.”
While the tribute book is mostly finished, Tuckfield and Hunt need some additional funds and will be launching a Kickstarter in Fall 2019.
