Given that Escape Room was a massive box office, pulling in $118.6 million worldwide on a $9m production budget, it was only a matter of time before a sequel to the film was announced. Deadline now reports that Sony is indeed developing Escape Room 2, with director of the first film, Adam Robitel, returning to direct.
We’ve also learned today that Sony will be releasing the film on April 17th, 2020, which suggests that Escape Room could become the next horror franchise to receive annual entries. Of course, this is all based on how well the sequel performs.
No further plot details are available at this time.
Escape Room follows six strangers who find themselves in a maze of deadly rooms, and must use their wits to find the clues or die.
Bragi F. Schut will also return to write, with Neal H. Moritz producing.
