Tony Todd Professionally Offers Blessings To The New 'Candyman'

When it was first announced last year, the Jordan Peel-produced, Nia DaCosta-directed "spiritual sequel" to Bernard Rose's Candyman had many fans asking if Tony Todd would be reprising the role of the iconic titular character. Well, that question was answered this week.

And the answer is no, Todd will not be playing Candyman in DaCosta’s film, instead Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will be taking on the role.

We'd usually expect to see the original actor take to social media to slander the project and curse the fact they weren't recast, that's not the case here. Todd took to Twitter to react to the news with professionalism and class.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly last month, Todd said, “I’m hoping I will appear in the film in some form of fashion. Wouldn’t that make sense? But it’s Hollywood, so I won’t take it personally if for some reason it doesn’t work out.” He added, “If this new one is successful, it will shed light back on the original. I think the subject matter is more important than any individuals. And I mean that.”

Candyman is slated for a theatrical release on June 12th, 2020, with production planned to start this spring.
