"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" is seeing a revival of sorts with a new film adaptation in the works, a reboot of the series on Nickelodeon and an upcoming documentary. Simply titled Scary Stories, Wild Eye Releasing acquired the doc for distribution earlier this year, and have now announced they'll be releasing it on July 16th, 2019!
The doc, directed by Cody Meirick, features more than 40 interviews including Alvin Schwartz’s family members and fellow authors like R.L Stine, as well as folklorists, artists and fans.
The home video release will include director's commentary and over 20 minutes of bonus footage.
“The three-volume series, written by Alvin Schwartz and illustrated by Stephen Gammell from 1981-1991, featured short horror stories for kids that were adapted from folklore and urban legends — it was the intro to the genre for a swath of kids in that generation. Some parent groups and school boards had the books pulled from libraries and schools owing to Gammell’s sometimes violent illustrations.”
