Late last month, it was reported that Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II had joined the cast of Nia DaCosta's upcoming spiritual sequel to Candyman, and at that time we were told that he would be playing our new Candyman. Well, that news has been called into question today, as DaCosta has cleared things up from the original report.
"Well, it’s been slightly misreported," DaCosta told Collider this week. "I can’t say what’s happening in the film because we want it to be a surprise, but he’s not replacing Tony Todd. That’s been reported, and I was just like, “I don’t know what to say about this. This is not right.’"
It;s hard to decipher what to make of all this, but it seems that Abdul-Mateen II will most likely be playing an entirely new character who possibly becomes the titular Candyman. So, is it still possible that Tony Todd may return in some way? We're gonna say that anything is possible at this point!
Teyonah Parris (If Beale Street Could Talk) will reportedly play the girlfriend of an art dealer obsessed with the legend of Candyman.
The film returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.
Jordan Peele produced and co-wrote the script with Win Rosenfeld.
Candyman is slated for a theatrical release on June 12th, 2020, with production planned to start this spring.
