Ari Aster Refers To 'Midsommar' As 'Wizard Of Oz' For Perverts

Midsommar Wizard of Oz for Perverts

Hereditary director Ari Aster is back this year with Midsommar, a follow-up to last year's breakout hit and a film he recently described as both a “post apocalyptic breakup movie” and a “Scandinavian folk horror film.” We don't really know what to expect from the film outside of a teaser trailer (below), and we're sure it'll unsettle us just as much, if not more, than Hereditary (read our review) did upon its release this August.

In a recent chat with Vulture, Aster was asked what movie he'd liken Midsommar to, to which he responded: “It’s a Wizard of Oz for perverts.”

He also told the site, “It’s a breakup movie, in the same way that Hereditary is a family tragedy. It’s less overtly a horror movie, but it’s still working in that same space. It’s very macabre. But people shouldn’t go in expecting Hereditary.”

The film centers on a Pagan cult festival that takes place once every ninety years, and despite the vibrant environment, it doesn't look like a fun place to be. Speaking of the color palette, unlike Hereditary, Midsommar looks to feature a lot more brightly lit, daylight scenes - but rest assured, there's a very unnerving, sinister tone.

Midsommar stars Jack Reynor, Will Poulter and Florence Pugh with Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia and Archie Madekwe.

“Pugh and Reynor will play a couple that travels to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.”

A24 will release the film in theaters on August 9th, 2019.
