'Pet Sematary' Will Most Likely Get A Prequel, Not A Sequel

As with many modern horror hits, remake or original, everything eventually becomes a franchise, and it seems Paramount's new spin on Stephen King's Pet Sematary will continue the trend as a followup is already being talked about. Apparently, if the studio does decide to venture back into the universe, it will be in the form of a sequel.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura recently told Consequence of Sound that another trip to Ludlow, Maine isn't out of the question, given the amount of untapped backstory buried beneath sour ground.

“I generally don’t start thinking about [sequels] until they’re a success,” di Bonaventura told CoS, continuing, “I think if there’s anything here, there’s a prequel. I think if you look at the book, we didn’t cover all that stuff that happens before the Creed family moves in."

“So, I think there’s a movie there, and I think I’d be particularly interested in doing that,” he adds, “because, again, it’s the source material and you are going toward something that also has a lot of crazy, creepy feelings about it.”

Losers' Club host Dan Caffrey also notes that the town of Ludlow is full of short stories told through the perspective of Jud Crandall, portrayed by John Lithgow in the new film.

In the new adaptation from Jeff Buhler,

“Based on the seminal horror novel by Stephen King, Pet Sematary follows Dr. Louis Creed, who, after relocating with his wife Rachel and their two young children from Boston to rural Maine, discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near the family’s new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his unusual neighbor, Jud Crandall, setting off a perilous chain reaction that unleashes an unfathomable evil with horrific consequences.”

Jeté Laurence will play Ellie Creed, with Jason Clarke (Winchester) and Amy Seimetz (A Horrible Way to Die) as our new Louis and Rachel Creed. John Lithgow will be taking over the role of Jud Crandall, originally played by Fred Gwynne. Twins Hugo Lavoie and Lucas Lavoie will play the iconic role of Gage Creed. actress Alyssa Brooke Levine has been cast as Zelda, with Obssa Ahmed playing Victor Pascow.

Paramount will release the film on April 5th, 2019.
