AMC Will Expand 'The Walking Dead' Universe With Female-Led Second Spinoff

AMC Walking Dead Third Series Announced

Even though ratings are at an all time low, AMC's "The Walking Dead" will be receiving yet another spinoff series, AMC announced early this morning.

Entertainment Weekly reports that AMC has officially green-lit a new "scripted series set in the world of The Walking Dead," an original drama co-created by Scott M. Gimple, chief content officer of “The Walking Dead” universe, and Matt Negrete, writer and producer on "The Walking Dead" for the past five seasons, will be showrunner of the new series, which will be the third series overall after "The Walking Dead" and "Fear The Walking Dead".

The new series will "feature two young female protagonists and focus on the first generation to come-of-age in the apocalypse as we know it. Some will become heroes. Some will become villains. In the end, all of them will be changed forever. Grown-up and cemented in their identities, both good and bad.”

Produced and distributed by AMC Studios, the series will kick off with 10 episodes that begin production in Virginia this summer.

“Showing audiences an unseen pocket of The Walking Dead universe steeped in a new mythology is a very cool way to celebrate a ‘Decade of the Dead’ on TV and over 15 years of Robert Kirkman’s brilliant comic," Gimple told EW. "Matt Negrete is one of the best writer-producers in TWD’s long history — I’m thrilled to be working beside him to tell stories unlike we’ve seen before, taking our first step into an even larger world.”

Details in regards to cast and relation to the current "Walking Dead" series have yet to be announced. Stay tuned for more updates.
