Tim Burton Doubts The 'Beetlejuice' Sequel Will Ever Actually Happen

Tim Burton and Michael Keaton recently re-teamed for Disney's Dumbo, which is currently in theaters, but what about that highly-demanded Beetlejuice sequel that's been teased for far too long now? It was most recently rumored that Warner Bros. was actively developing a new Beetlejuice movie, but it's been quite some time since we've heard any sort of update, and this latest one isn't great.

USA Today reports that Warner Bros. is no longer developing "Beetlejuice 2," with the studio's spokeswoman telling the site: “The project isn’t in active development.”

“Nothing, nothing. I don’t know. I doubt it [will happen]," said Burton when asked what's going on with the sequel.

“The bottom line is, Tim Burton and Michael Keaton are not going to think about a Beetlejuice sequel unless it somehow catches the energy of the first film,” Larry Wilson, co-writer of the 1988 movie, told the site. “And that’s not easy. Beetlejuice really was lightning in a bottle. But there have been discussions since it really shocked everyone in 1988. And in terms of Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, wiser heads prevailed. Thank God there’s a level of integrity here.”

Years ago, the abandoned script for Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian was written by Jonathan Gems, and more recently, Seth Grahame-Smith and Mike Vukadinovich were hire to pen new iterations. Over the years, both Keaton and Winona Ryder have expressed interest in returning, but don't count on it.
