Yeah, another Poltergeist remake could be happening...
Back in 2015, Fox 2000 teamed up with Ghost House Pictures and MGM to put their own spin on Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper‘s classic Poltergeist...and the response, well, it wasn't so great.
Now, Deadline has reported that Marvel regulars Joe & Anthony Russo, the duo behind Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and this summer’s Avengers: Endgame, have made a new deal with MGM. According to the site, the Russo’s company, AGBO Films, made the deal to become the "spiritual creative architects of some of the iconic properties in the MGM library." This gives the Russo's plenty of classics to choose from, and rumors are spreading that Poltergeist is at the top of the list.
Originally, Deadline mentioned the 1982 chiller by name, but they've since removed it from the article. It's not yet clear why the title was removed, but other outlets have already begun sharing the news.
"Now, Marvel darlings Joe & Anthony Russo are disturbing MGM’s burial ground as they’ve been given carte blanche to make films from anything in the studio’s library, Deadline is reporting. Of the massive library, it’s already been decided that the duo will be tackling another remake of Poltergeist," Bloody Disgusting wrote.
With SYFY Wire adding, "Also exciting are the other films the MGM catalog includes, first and foremost being the horror classic Poltergeist. Deadline speculates about this title specifically, noting that the deal is 'fueled by the allure' of its potential remake."
Gil Kenan's 2015 remake followed a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces must come together to rescue their youngest daughter after the apparitions take her captive.
