It was reported last year that the team behind the 2007 survival thriller Black Water are reuniting to make a sequel, with Altitude Film Sales handling the film at the various markets, and today, we have a new piece of sale of art that shows the film's cast descending into the jaws of death.
Director and producer team Andrew Traucki (The Reef) and Michael Robertson are making Black Water: Abyss, which follows an adventure-loving couple who convince who their friends to explore a remote, uncharted cave system in the forests of Northern Australia. With a tropical storm approaching, they abseil into the mouth of the cave, knowing they’ll be safe underground. But when the caves start to flood, tensions rise as oxygen levels fall and the group find themselves lost, disoriented, and trapped. Little do they know, the dank air and rising water are the least of their worries. They discover the storm has brought in a pack of apex predators - dangerous and hungry crocodiles. As danger mounts, long-kept secrets emerge and the friends turn on each other in a frantic fight for survival.
Mike Runagall from Altitude says the sequel will retain the feel of the original, which was mostly shot with real crocodiles with little reliance on CGI. "Black Water: Abyss employs the same ingenious approach on a much larger canvas to deliver a highly commercial high-concept thriller from a team with a proven track record in this arena," Runagall said.
Robertson added: “Like all films in this genre, Black Water: Abyss is designed to terrify and scare, cause dread and alarm, to invoke our worst hidden fears – in this case, a fear heavily imprinted in our genes, the fear of being eaten alive by a vicious, unreasoning predator.”
