A couple years ago, it was reported that Warner Bros. was developing a reboot of The Matrix, the two decade old film that put Keanu Reeves' Neo inside a robot-created supercomputer that he go on to free mankind from.
But instead of a reboot, it’s looks as if the studio and the Wachowskis plan to revisit the original franchise with a canonized sequel, possible a prequel.
"I’m super happy that the Wachowskis are not just doing a Matrix, but they’re expanding what we all loved," John Wick 3 director Chad Stahelski, who worked on the original trilogy, told Yahoo Movies UK. "And if it’s anywhere near the level of what they’ve already done, it wouldn’t take more than a call to go, ‘Hey, we want you to be a stunt guy’ and I would probably go and get hit by a car."
They followed up by asking if the Wachowskis were directing the new film. "I’m not sure of the overall," Stahelski replied. "I’m not sure if Lana is."
But they’re involved? "Yeah. And if they wanted help, I would absolutely put down whatever I was doing to help them."
This news is great to hear, as we know fans are becoming tired of remakes, while canonized sequels continue to grow in popularity. I mean, why risk tarnishing the franchise when you can just expand the story?
