We know that we won't be getting a new Purge movie this year but we've learned that the franchise's fifth installment will arrive next year. This week, Universal has set a July 10th, 2020 release date, the same exact day as Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters. We're guessing one will move.
James DeMonaco, who has written all four Purge movies and directed the first three films, tells EW that he has an idea for the next entry in the series, which he also thinks will be the last.
"I have [the next installment] in my head," DeMonaco told the site. "I think I’m going to write it. I think it’s a great way to end it all. We want to end it all, I think, in this one, and I’m very excited. When I came up with the idea and pitched it to everybody, they seemed psyched, and I think it will be a really cool ending, how we take this one home."
The First Purge raked in a more than respectable $69 million at the box office, proving that the franchise is still profitable on the big screen, but how much more can possibly be milked from the concept? If the fifth film really is the last one, let's hope the franchise can go out with a bang!
Stay tuned for a title reveal and further announcements.
