Dark Secrets Lurk Beneath The Sunshine In New Trailer For 'Midsommar'

Midsommar New Trailer Ari Aster

After taking the horror world by storm with last year's Hereditary, director Ari Aster returns this Summer with Midsommar, which he has previously described as a “post apocalyptic breakup movie” and "Wizard of Oz for perverts."

A24 has shared a brand-new trailer today, which shines more light on the cult that celebrates Midsommar every 90 years. The footage show looks like a bizarre mixture of Robin Hardy’s The Wicker Man and Alice in Wonderland on acid. This one is very high on our must-see list!

In the film, Dani (Florence Pugh) and Christian (Jack Reynor) are a young American couple with a relationship on the brink of falling apart. But after a family tragedy keeps them together, a grieving Dani invites herself to join Christian and his friends on a trip to a once-in-a-lifetime midsummer festival in a remote Swedish village. What begins as a carefree summer holiday in a land of eternal sunlight takes a sinister turn when the insular villagers invite their guests to partake in festivities that render the pastoral paradise increasingly unnerving and viscerally disturbing.

One can't help but notice Florence Pugh‘s performance, which already looks primed to rival Toni Collette's in Hereditary. It's obvious Aster has a way of getting the most out of his actors.

Aster also takes a big risk here, attempting to portray horror in the daylight, with the official synopsis boasting: “Midsommar is a dread-soaked cinematic fairytale where a world of darkness unfolds in broad daylight.”

Midsommar also stars Will Poulter, Vilhem Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia and Archie Madekwe.

The festivities begin on July 3rd, 2019.
