James Wan-Produced 'Mortal Kombat' Movie Is Finally Happening!

It was revealed a couple years ago that James Wan would be producing a new Mortal Kombat feature film, but Wan has been pretty busy since then with an incredibly long list of upcoming projects he’s attached to produce. We were beginning to worry that Mortal Kombat was never going see the light of day, but a press release issued in Australia lets us know that production is finally set to begin!

Multiple sources, including Variety, report that New Line Cinema’s highly anticipated “epic action film” will film in Adelaide, Australia, with Simon McQuoid attached to direct. Production is slated to begin later this year on the film, which will be McQuoid's feature directorial debut.

The press release hypes that, "Mortal Kombat is a bold cinematic adventure based on the blockbuster video game franchise."

"Mortal Kombat will be the largest film production in South Australia’s history and highlights the importance of engaging with the world’s major production houses," said South Australia’s Premier Stephen Marshall.

The current screenplay is by Greg Russo (the upcoming Highwaymen). Todd Garner (Isn’t It Romantic, Tag) also produces alongside Wan, with Larry Kasanoff (True Lies), E. Bennett Walsh (Men in Black: International, The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Michael Clear (The Nun, Lights Out), and Sean Robins are executive producing.
