Neill Blomkamp Guarantees That His 'RoboCop' Sequel Will Feature The Original Suit

While he may not be making that Aliens sequel that fans have been wanting for year, Neill Blomkamp (District 9) is actually making a sequel to RoboCop, which is set to be a follow-up to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic. As we learned last year, the film is based upon a script written by Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner back in the '80s, and Blomkamp is rewriting it with Justin Rhodes.

Last we heard, the film is going to be titled RoboCop Returns, in which "anarchy reigns and the fate of Detroit hangs in the balance as RoboCop makes his triumphant return to fight crime and corruption."

Neumeier described Blomkamp’s vision earlier this year, "His idea is that it should be the proper Verhoeven… if Verhoeven had directed a movie right after RoboCop… I think that’s what he is trying to achieve and I hope he does. We’ll see what happens next."

Blomkamp himself gave a small update on the project over on Twitter this weekend, expressing a similar point of view. "Script is being written. Going well! Imagine watching Verhoeven do a follow up film," Blomkamp tweeted.

This tweet led to a fan asking if the original suit design will be used in the new movie, and Blomkamp assured that it will be. "1 million% original," he responded to the question.

Will Peter Weller return as the titular character? Well, if he'll get back in the suit for KFC, surely he'll do so for a new feature film! Only time will tell.
