'Midsommar' Originally Received An NC-17 Rating; Extended Cut On The Way

Midsommar Extended Cut NC-17 Rating

Much like Hereditary before it, Ari Aster's Midsommar has received very divided reactions, with viewers absolutely loving it or hating it. Well if you're one of the former. you'll be happy to know that an extended cut of the film is on the way!

With the film already clocking in at nearly two and a half hours, Aster revealed in a Reddit AMA session this week that he’s "working on an extended cut” of the film that "will be at least 30 mins longer."

What will we see added into the film? While Aster didn't say, he did reveal that the film was originally tagged with a "NC-17" rating by the MPAA that lasted "for six weeks." He went through "lots of back-and-forth" with the MPAA to score the film’s final "R" rating.

SPOILERS BELOW!

Hereditary and Midsommar both feature gruesome head trauma and close up gore, as well as sex and full-frontal nudity, all things that don't sit so well with the MPAA.

All this said, 30 minutes of footage being added back into a film is a pretty extensive reworking and makes one wonder if entire sequences were removed from the film.

Stay tuned for the official home video announcement later this Summer!
