Director Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl) has signed on for a TV adaptation of Junji Ito's manga series Tomie for the upcoming streaming service Quibi, Bloody Disgusting reports today.
Based on the cult hit manga series, Tomie is the story of what happens when a beautiful high school girl goes missing and pieces of her body are discovered scattered around a small town. But what starts out as a murder mystery turns into something even more horrific.
Aja will both direct and executive produce the series, with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring 2, Aquaman) reportedly writing and also executive producing the Ito adaptation. Hiroki Shirota on board as co-producer.
The project hails from Sony Pictures Television and Universal Content Productions.
First published in 1987, Tomie has been adapted into an 8-film franchise as well as a TV series in Japan.
